1 1 Parent Materials of Soils SS 121 Moody 2 Soil Forming Factors • Parent material • Topography • Climate • Biological Activity •T ime 3 Soil forms from parent material • Residuum – Weathered rock • Sediment (transported) • Organic (plant) material 4 Residuum = weathered rock • Igneous – cooling and solidification of magma • Sedimentary – particles or chemicals deposited, cemented into new rocks • Metamorphic – heat and pressure applied to older rocks • Most rocks made of minerals 5 Rocks are made of minerals • Minerals are naturally occurring, crystalline, inorganic chemical compounds – Resistant – Weatherable – Intermediate (Weathering = physical and chemical changes at earth surface) 6 Resistant minerals • Quartz, SiO 2 • Orthoclase feldspar, KAlSi 3 O 8 • Muscovite, a mica, KAl 3 Si 3 O 10 (OH) 2 • Rocks composed of quartz and orthoclase weather slowly into sandy or silty soils
