Ethnic Groups and Discrimination 2 I am a descendant of the Irish Catholic ethnicity. My grandmother did immigrate to the United States from Ireland in the early 1900’s. Like many other immigrates, her family came to the Unites States for freedom of persecution, religious persecution. Unbeknownst to the family, they would be subjected to limits and persecution of their religious beliefs in the land of opportunity. Ida Dunn was born in Ireland in 1905. Family had previously immigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago, Illinois. The Chicago area was amongst the top cities in population of Irish immigrates. The teenage years are difficult for many, but the difficulty a teenager of an Irish Catholic was unbearable at times. At the age of nineteen, Grandma Ida met and married Papa Walter Bandelow from Bandelow, Germany. Once married, Grandma Ida did change her religious beliefs to that of Lutheran. She adopted Papa’s beliefs partly to avoid further religious persecution, prejudice, and segregation. Grandma Ida always gave the main reason for changing religions as she wanted to have the same religion of her husband. Irish Catholics came to America during the colonization of the young country.
