Race and Racism : Definitions and Origins Racism as an ideology What is an ideology? -Systematic explanation based on assumptions about human nature and the character of social interactions -A vision of how society should be organized and managed The Ideology of Racism -Does not merely mean Dislike for outsiders Dislike for those who are “different” -Racism is not a universal feature of “human nature” -Uniquely European development Sources -Christian anti-Semitism (Middle Ages) -African slave trade (Beginning 15 th Century) -Emergence of the notion of unalterable, fundamental differences between human groups The Concept of Race -Foundation of a classification system Unique characteristics (possessed only by specific groups) Permanent characteristics Inherited characteristics (characteristics are passed on) -All members of a racial group possessed all of these characteristics -Typically based on physical/biological characteristics Skin color “Blood” -crucial feature of race and racism
