Chapter 6 19:13 Energy o Has the capacity to cause change o Can do work Biological work  metabolism Energy is not created from scratch…the Laws of Thermodynamics shed light on  how energy is transferred and what forms it comes in o “Law” in Physics = “Theory” in Biology o 1.) The total amount of energy in the universe remains constant. Energy can’t  be created or destroyed; it can only be converted from one form to another Examples: Sugar contains bond-energy with the potential to provide fuel  for cellular metabolism.  Heat being emitted from a warm rock is collected by a lizard and used to  warm its organs to a temperature where it can efficiently function. o 2.) Left alone, living systems transform to less organized forms. As this  happens, some energy is dispersed in a form not as readily available to do  work as its original form
