World Regions Lecture 17:31 IN THE NEWS: Nobel peace prize was awarded to a Chinese man (pro-democracy activist –  currently in jail because Chinese government got pissed) o Chinese government does not like to be embarrassed  o Not completely opposed to democracy, don’t like taking advice from other  Western governments Zambia probes shooting of workers at China-run mine o Chinese-run coal mine in the south of the country (Zambia) shot and  wounded at least 11 miners o They felt threatened by miners who protested about their working conditions China, Ghana pledge to lift bilateral ties to a new high (China on an African tour) o      WORLD LEADERS: Prime minister of Iraq has very close relations with the leader of Iran o US not happy China Vice President Xi Jinping given key military job
