NLRA AFL workers choose whether to be represented by a union. CIO • NLRA endorses collective bargaining process, leaves result open to parties involved. THE TAFT‐HARTLEY AMENDMENTS (1947) • Provides safeguards against unfair labor practices: Stipulates workers cannot be Passed by Congress to NLRA. Setback for labor in three major areas: fired for trying to organize a union at workplace. • NLRA is legal basis for modern American unionism. 1. Outlawed secondary boycotts and sympathy strikes. 2. Allowed states to outlaw contracts requiring union membership as condition of employment. 3. Allowed President to force striking workers back to work in cases of national emergency.
