Ch. 12 Psychological Disorders I. Criteria for Abnormality A. deviance: i. does the person's behavior fall outside the normal range of behavior? a) Every culture has social norms/expectations, not meeting them=abnormality ii. but, what is “normal” in one society is not always in another iii. standards for deviance also change over time iv. for these reasons, deviant behavior isn't typically enough to diagnose a person with a disorder B. maladaptive behavior: i. does the person's behavior interfere with personal and social adaptation? C. Personal distress: i. does the behavior cause personal anguish or discomfort? ii. Loss of D. may have psychological disorder if any one of criteria are met, though usually meet more II. Classification of Psychological Disorders A. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, IV TR i. Classification system published by APA ii. Lists over 200 psychological disorders
