Purpose: Practice writing hypotheses and using p-values to make decisions 1. You have been assigned to learn whether or not lung cancer rates differ between smokers and non-smokers. After you conduct your testing, your test statistic’s p- value is 0.002. a) Write the null (H 0 ) and alternative (H A ) hypotheses for this problem. H 0 : lung cancer rates of smokers and non-smokers are the same H A : lung cancer rates of smokers and non-smokers differ b) What is the probability that you’ll be wrong if you reject your H 0 ? 0.2% (2/10s of 1%) c) How confident can you be if you reject your H 0 ? 99.8% d) Based upon your test’s p-value, do you reject your H 0 or not reject it? Reject your H 0 . 2. Your boss just told that she wants you to determine if average salaries differ between males and females in your company. After you finish your analyses, you get a test statistic p-value = 0.04. a) Write the null (H 0 ) and alternative (H A ) hypotheses for this problem.
