IES 112 Section 301 Outside Lecture On Thursday, May 3 I went to the outside lecture event with guest Jeff Ferrell. Jeff is the author of the book, “Empire of Scrounge: Inside the Urban Underground of Dumpster Diving, Trash Picking, and Street Scavenging.” Just by hearing the title of the book I knew that this was going to be an interesting lecture. As the title says, Jeff was, in fact, one of the dumpster divers himself. One day, Jeff decided to quit his job and move back to his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. He bought a small house (which was more like a shed) and only stayed there when he was sleeping or showering. During the day Jeff would dumpster dive. He got around by bike and foot and lived in the streets. He got to know people who were homeless and/or had an income but a small one at that. I found this information very interesting because it is believed that everyone who scrounges is homeless, but obviously, as I now know, this is not the case. Jeff told us of his many findings while living on the streets and scrounging. He
