Phil – January 25, 2010 Socrates on Ethics Socrates What is courage? To be courageous we must know what courage is Laches (1): “He is a man of courage who does not run away, but remains at his post and fights against the enemy” o Standing, fighting, not running away o Very narrow (what about soldiers on horseback? Fighter pilot?) o Non military examples: standing up for yourself, against authority, addressing your personal fears, realizing the enemy is you o Can you fight courageously for the wrong (ex: Nazi soldiers)? We assume they will be doing the right thing o There are other kinds of courage o But also, it is too broad: fighting isn’t always courageous Better: Laches (2): “A sort of endurance of the soul” o Of course Socrates will ask “What sort?” o This is unclear Laches (3): “A wise endurance of the soul” o What if someone is sent on a suicide mission? It doesn’t seem very wise, but his army would think it is courageous o What if the sacrifice was worth it? Then it would be wise
