Confucius 18:04 Confucius (551-479)     5:12 Zi-Kong said, “We may hear the master on letters and culture. But we  may not hear him on human nature and the way of Heaven.” Nature and Nurture     Confucius speaks about what we can affect—what arises from nurture He declines to speak of human nature itself Human Nature     Later Confucians advanced views of human nature Mencius: People are naturally good  o Ex: In a backyard BBQ and you see a toddler walking near a well. You  don’t even have to question whether or not you are going to help the baby. Xunzi: People are naturally evil o People are always trying to promote their own interests before anyone  else. This is our natural state and we have to force ourselves to be good.  This is Nurture. Zhu Xi: Moral mind vs. Natural Mind o Ex: Sometimes people are naturally sociopathic and other people are  naturally good. Use backyard baby example.
