THE KU KLUX KLAN By Matthew Zauchenberger The Ku Klux Klan was a terrorist organization that began in 1866 in the South founded by Confederate veterans as a social club in Pulaski, Tennessee because of the Emancipation Proclamation that was passed during the reconstruction period after the Civil War. They were devoted to “100 percent Americanism ().” Those who were higher up in the Klan were a grand wizard, who was its leader, and several other positions such as grand dragons, grand titans, and grand cyclopses. It was created for the American Caucasians that were angry about the civil rights and political power of the slaves and its purpose was to reestablish white dominance. According to them they were, ”White male persons, native born gentile citizens who believe in keeping blacks in their place.” It’s name was taken from the Greek word kyklos, meaning “circle,” and the English word clan. They participated in raids and gatherings in which they dressed in white hooded robes where they would whip and lynch African Americans. In 1869, there was such an increase in kidnappings and murders that the grand wizard ordered that the clan be disbanded. These increases also lead to the Force Act in 1879 and the Ku Klux Klan Act in 1871, which allowed
