Nervous 1. Central Nervous System- brain and spinal cord 2. Peripheral Nervous System 1. Sensory Division- carry signals to brain (taste, touch, etc) 2. Motor – carry signals from brain to rest of body a. Somatic (Voluntary)- skeletal muscle b. Autonomic (Involuntary)- cardiac, smooth, and glands i. Sympathetic- dealing with stress ii. Parasympathetic Nervous Tissue 1. Neurons- respond to stimuli 2. Supporting Cells- neuroglia a. Support and Protect Neurons Nervous Composition 1. Cell body- responsible for nutrition, growth and repair 2. Nucleus (DNA) a. Nucleolus (RNA) 3. Nissl Bodies- rough ER a. Rough ER- ribosomes and tubular passageway = protein production and modification 4. Dendrites- carry messages toward cell body 5. Axon- carry messages away from cell body 6. Axon Hillock- where axon meets cell body (portion of cell body from where axon originates) Neuron Classification 1. Multipolar: one axon, many dendrites 2. Bipolar: one dendrite, one axon 3. Pseudounipolar: when a single process comes off cell body and divides into two branches
