Anti-depressants Depression  Mood stabilizers Bipolar Disorder  Anti-psychotics Psychotic episodes, Schizophrenia  Anti-anxiety Anxiety Disorders How do they work:  Tricyclic Amitriptyline (Elavil) Imipramine (Tofranil)  SSRI Fluoxetine (Prozac) Citalopram (Celexa) Sertraline ()  MAOI Tricyclics  Affects serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine  Inhibits reabsorption of serotonin and norepinephrine, lesser effect on dopamine  Also blocks other cell receptors Side Effects: Drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, SSRI: Selective serotonin  Somewhat of a mystery  Blocks reabsorption of serotonin by certain brain cells, boosting the amount available  Only affects serotonin  Also in extended release Side-effects: Nausea, sexual dysfunction, dry mouth, MAOI: Monoamine oxidase  First class of antidepressants (1950s)  Prevents the enzyme monoamine oxidase from metabolizing norepinephrine, serotonin...
