That is one word that could describe what power could do to control the human mind and form an entire new personality of an individual. When coming in the hands of authority, one will do anything to abuse the power given to seek revenge and do what is truly satisfying. In Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Cask of Amontillado”, power is abused by the character, Montresor, in which he plays mind tricks to try and kill another character. In Christopher Marlow’s story, “The Tragedy of Dr. Faustus”, the main character, Dr.Faustus, ultimately gives his soul to Lucifer in the hope to abuse his power of magic and give away his life. In the texts, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus”, Montressor and Faustus reveals how the acquisition of power can lead to corruption and fault in the end. Power does not always mean that good things are bound to happen, and that is expressed in the story of “The Cask of Amontillado”. Montressor presents a typical topic of gothic literature by seeking revenge on Fortunato and luring him down to his cellar, indicating a place of isolation. He manipulates Fortunato into believing they are friends and creates an illusion by saying, “"Come," I said... "we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected,
