1 Practice Final According to Darwin's theory, what three conditions are necessary for natural selection to produce adaptations? The ability to digest lactose as an adult is controlled by a single genetic locus with two alleles, LAC*P and LAC*R . People who carry one or copies of the dominant LAC*P allele at that locus can digest lactose as adults. Individuals who are homozygous for LAC*R cannot digest lactose as adults. Amongst the Beja, a north African people, 84% of people can digest milk as adults. (a) Assuming that the population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium at the lactose absorption, compute the frequency of the LAC*P allele. Be sure to show your work. (b) There is much evidence that the ability to digest lactose as an adult is strongly beneficial among nomadic camel pastoralists like the Beja. This suggests that all of the Beja should be able to digest lactose (or, in other words, the frequency of the LAC*P allele should be equal to one). The frequency of the LAC*P allele may be low because camels were only domesticated a few thousand years ago and before that time the was no benefit to having the ability to digest lactose as an adult. Explain why the fact that LAC*P is dominant makes this explanation for its relatively low frequency more plausible than it would be if LAC*P were recessive. Infanticide by males is generally limited to species that form one-male groups. However, it seems likely that males in multimale groups would also profit from killing infants if it reduced the mother’s interbirth interval. Give two reasons why is infanticide more prevalent in species that from one-male groups than in species that form multimale groups. In the early part of the 19 th century members of two Anabaptist religious groups, the Hutterites and the Old Order Amish immigrated to the United States from central Europe. All contemporary Hutterites were descended from 443 people, while the founding population of the Old Order Amish was 200 people. Since that time both groups have been almost closed to immigration. Recently, researchers have collected blood samples that allow them to estimate gene frequencies for the two populations at a number of genetic loci.
