The word echo (or a variation such as echoes, etc.) appears a total of 37 times, including in titles. The stage directions contain a majority of the mentions of the word, although Lucy, Brazil and The Digger also say it. The Digger says it the fewest number of times however, only twice. When the stage directions use the word it usually repeats the word in an adjacent sentence, and almost always has to do with the gunshot. When Lucy and Brazil use the word, they are talking about Lucys ability to hear the past, and whether they can find something reminiscent of The Digger who is lost to them. The use of it as the title of two sections in Act I I are to reinforce the word and the literal meaning it has throughout the play and in terms of stylized repetition. 3.
