Brenda Delgado CHM235IN lab W 8:40 AM November 3, 2010 Lab Report Fischer Esterification Abstract: We performed a Fischer Esterification to synthetically react a carboxylic acid with an alcohol, in our case 1-pentanol. Our percent recovery was 25.77% with an initial amount of 1.195 g of 1- pentanol and initial amount of .455 g of pentanol acetate. Our sample smelled like bananas. I. Purpose of Experiment The objective of this experiment is to make an ester by a Fischer Esterification; a synthetic reaction that is done by reacting a carboxylic acid with an alcohol. We apply le Chatelier’s Principle; a system at equilibrium adjusts as to minimize stress applied to it, for an equilibrium reaction using an extraction procedure, distillation to purify the product and calculating the percent yield. II. Introduction and Background Esters are among the most widespread of all naturally occurring compounds. Many simple esters are pleasant-smelling liquids that are responsible for the fragrant odors of fruits and flowers. Esters can be formed from both organic and inorganic acids and the process of producing an ester is called an Esterification. Esters of organic acids are usually colorless, neutral liquids, pleasant-smelling and generally insoluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents. Esters are prepared synthetically in large quantities for commercial use as artificial fruit essences and other flavorings and as components of perfumes. Esterification involves the condensation of the carboxyl group of an acid and the hydroxyl group of an alcohol, with the elimination of water. Many Esterification reactions are slow and elevated temperatures are frequently used. Since the Esterification reaction is an
