Photosynthesis Overall reaction: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + light C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 1. Light dependent reactions - Converting solar energy to chemical energy - Uses light energy to extract electrons from H 2 O - Releases oxygen (O 2 ) as a waste product of photosynthesis - Produces ATP and NADPH 2. Light independent reactions - Making sugar from carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) - Sometimes referred to as the “Calvin cycle” - Uses CO 2 , ATP and NADPH - Produces glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) Flow of energy and electrons: 1. water (H 2 O) is split (making electrons, H + and O 2 ) 2. electrons go to first photosystem 3. sun boosts energy of electrons from low to high 4. proteins in ETC accept electrons and pass down chain 5. energy from electrons is used to pump protons (H + ) from low concentration to high concentration (creates proton gradient) 6. protons (H + ) flow from high concentration to low concentration through ATP synthase 7. ATP synthase uses energy released from proton gradient to regenerate ATP from
