Cynthia Irungu Humanities 102 Research Term Paper In the Lake of The Woods: A Mystery Unfurled Plato’s allegory of the cave is often used to describe human nature. In this story, humans are depicted as being imprisoned by their bodies and what they perceive by sight only Plato suggests our experience of reality is detached from the reality of existence. John Wade’s reality in Tim O’Brien’s In the Lake of the Woods mirrors the lesson taught by Plato’s allegory. Through a broken chronology of events and suggestive narrative, O’Brien blurs the lines between fiction and reality and leaves the reader to form their own conclusions. O’Brien’s depiction of John’s experiences invokes a discussion about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a “type of anxiety disorder that's triggered by a traumatic event.” (Mayo Clinic). PTSD is mostly observed in war veterans who have experienced some sort of traumatic event in the combat setting. In this essay, scholarly research in PTSD will be analyzed in order to build a substantive hypothesis surrounding Kathy’s fate. O’Brien characterizes Wade as the typical PTSD victim when he quotes Pat, Kathy’s sister, saying: “I remember Kathy telling me how he'd wake up screaming sometimes. Foul language, which I won't repeat. In fact, I'd rather not say anything at all.”(O’Brien, **). John’s behavior after returning from the war demonstrates symptoms of the disorder which include “upsetting dreams about the traumatic event [and] difficulty maintaining relationships” (Mayo
