fCynthia Irungu Humanities Essay 2 Malcolm X’s journey from a penniless young man to an important figure in a nationwide movement involved his transformation from a follower into a leader. By viewing Mr. X’s legacy in stages, this gradual but defined transformation is exposed. Malcolm’s first stage of personal growth is exemplified in Detroit Red. During this time, Malcolm can be characterized as a follower during which he is easily swayed by outside factors. Malcolm’s leadership qualities are not realized until Minister. It is important to note that this change was gradual. An internal struggle occurred within Malcolm during Savior and Saved, during which Malcolm was introduced to the Nation of Islam. Through this greater purpose, the budding of Malcolm’s qualities as a leader are catalyzed by his experience while in prison. It is essential to analyze all of these points in order to correctly evaluate the actualization of Malcolm’s role as a leader in his community and, ultimately, in American history.
