Lab 7 [Formed Elements of the Blood] [Blood Functions] 1. gaseous exchange 2. delivery of major nutrients 3. removal of waste metabolites 4. delivery of hormones 5. defense 6. thermal exchange 7. transport water around body Whole blood= consists of red and white blood cells and platelets Plasma= contains all the soluble components of blood, except cells Serum= same as plasma except lacks fibrinogen and other clotting factors [Composition of Blood ] -red blood cells -white blood cells -platelets [White Blood Cells] -Neutrophils= (50-70%) Are first line of defense; phagocytize and destroy invading bacteria -Eosinophils= (1-3%) Attack some parasites and modulate allergic and inflammatory responses -Basophil= (<1%) They release histamine, heparin, and other substances when activated by T- Lymphocytes -Monocytes=(3-9%) They enter the blood from the bone marrow and become tissue macrophages -Lymphocytes= large nucleus that takes up most of the cell (25-33%) B-Lymphocytes-make anti-bodies T-Lymphocytes-kill virus-infected cells and control the activities of other leukocytes (cytotoxic T-, helper T-, regulatory T-)

Natural Killer- kill virus-infected cells and some tumor cells [Red Blood Cells] -Erythrocytes= red blood cells (99%) of cells in blood Transport oxygen and some CO 2 Hematopoiesis= process of blood cell formation [Blood Cell Formation] -blood cells arise from common progenitor cells within bone marrow. Two Stem Cells -Lymphoid= give rise to lymphocytes -Myeloid= give rise to erythrocytes, megakaryocytes, granulocytes, or monocytes [Anemia] -Hemorrhagic anemia=loss of blood -Aplastic anemia= bone marrow loses its capacity to produce RBCs -Iron deficiency anemia= RBCs are small and hemoglobin is low -Pernicious anemia= lack of vitamin B12 -Sickle cell anemia -Hemolytic anemia= can result from hemolytic disease of the newborn Leukopenia= the bone marrow stops producing white blood cells [Leukemia] -Acute leukemia= the rapid increase in number of immature blood cells -Chronic leukemia= slow, excessive build up of relatively mature, but still abnormal, blood cells [Transport of Gases in the Blood] -Oxyhemoglobin= when oxygen and hemoglobin combine

-Carbaminohemoglobin= when CO 2 and globin combine -87-90% of CO 2 is in the form of bicarbonate ions LAB 8 (Lymphatic and Immune System) -Non-specific immune= natural immune system. Depends on macrophages, mast cells, neutrophils, NK cells, and complement -Specific immune= acquired immune system. Lymphocytes must work with antigen-presenting cells which consists of tissue macrophages, dendritic cells or Langerhans cells -Lymphatic vessels= a system of tubes filled with a fluid call lymph
