As you think about how to determine race, you have to think about the idea of how it began. The website www.understandingrace.org , gives you a timeline on how this idea began. It all started when the English settlers came to America and tried to take over the land of the Native Americans. They saw the Native Americans as different, not only by their way of life, but because of the color of their skin. This The view of race really came about with Thomas Jefferson saying that whites were more superior to Africans. Into more years to come, more immigrants came to America to seek a better life for themselves, but the original settlers still saw themselves superior to other people from other lands, which includes the Irish, Germans, Polish, Italians, and Jews, just to name a few. Moving on from this point of time all the way to 1950s and 1960s is when things started to change about race. Discrimination was being challenged every day, and then the moment of the Civil Rights Movement started to change everything. Many people though did not like this
