Susan Adada Lab Report 4 Cardiovascular System Introduction: The cardiovascular system has three main components: the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The main functions of the cardiovascular system are transporting respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, and hormones. Fuel and oxygen are also delivered to the tis- sues by this system. The CV system also regulates temperature, vasoconstriction in the cold and vasodilation in heat. The blood moves in a circular pattern called the vascu- lature, involving all the components. Two major functions that need to be understood and are investigated in this experiment are cardiac output and blood pressure. Cardiac output is the rate at which a ventricle pumps blood (liters per minute) while blood pres- sure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of the vessels, defined by systolic and diastolic pressures. Systolic arterial pressure occurs during ventricular contraction while diastolic arterial pressure occurs during ventricular relaxation. Studying and being familiar with the cardiovascular system is a major part of human health and the medical field. It is extremely important to fully understand the functions of the cardiovascular system in order to maintain health and human performance. Methods:
