Hypnosis Hypnos – Greek god of sleep The brainwaves of hypnotized people are similar to those of people in a relaxed state. People can respond to commands. Ambiguous state of consciousness Heightened sense of suggestibility What can hypnosis do? You can be given post-hypnotic suggestion. You will be able to do something after you “wake up” It can help control pain in some people What can’t it do? Improve memory Going to “future” or “past” lives Can you fake being hypnotized? Kenneth Bianchi – charged with raping and killing two people He claimed that it wasn’t him that killed the people, it was Steve, his alternative personality. Martin Orne was studying people that pretended to be hypnotized, it’s very hard to tell the difference between people that are pretending and those that are actually hypnotized.
