October 22, 2010 Groupthink Bay of Pigs Communist Cuba was a threat to America. JFK wanted a solution to the problem of Castro. CIA gave JFK a plan to send 1,500 Cuban exiles back to Cuba and have them attack followed by airstrikes. These people were caught or killed almost immediately Major Cuban victory Why would an administration of smart people think this plan would work? Other examples of decision failures Nixon engages in massive cover-up of information regarding Watergate Hotel break-in. Carter approved the attempted rescue of American hostages in Iran. NASA launched Challenger, despite safety concerns US Intelligence agencies claim Iraq had WMDs Groupthink can explain all these decision failures A faulty mode of thinking by group members Pressure for unanimity overwhelms realistic appraisal of information Not all bad decisions are due to groupthink though Consequences of Groupthink Limited considerations of alternatives (discussing only one option)
