DOC Lecture 01/06/2010 Substantive, Procedural, social contract, liberalism, ethnic likeness Humans have been conventionally defined as machines and animals. Animals: speech Machines: reasoning Dolphins are considered “non- human.” What then distinguishes humans from animals or machinery? Furthermore, what rights do “non-humans” have? -How does one measure justice in the social, economic, and political regime? -Fair: balancing of interests -determination or discovery -16-17 th century discovery of nature. “Women are, by nature, reproducers” To go against the nature laws, are chaos and disorder. -Typically, we think of these procedures, practices as divine. -/the law of nature, is the right to be free. -Is natural law divine law? Readings - Bible : Exodus 21. Sets out people’s relationship to God, and rules to how people will treat each other How the 10 commandments will be applied. It’s a contract, that getting set out here. These are laws that are concerning permanent injury.
