September 22, 2010 Impression Formation You “fill in” information to form a coherent impression of others But other people select what information they give to you This is impression management (self-presentation) Self-Presentation can be Authentic – the real you Ideal – What you ought to be Tactical – manipulative Erving Goffman’s “Dramaturgical” model All of the types of self-presentation overlap. Performance is a fact of social life How much does the performer believe in what is being presented? Spectrum: One end – completely taken in by own act Other end – completely cynical (no belief in own act, no concern with beliefs of audience) Goffman’s Parallels to Theater Regions of behavior (front/back) – you are performing on different stages Need for appropriate settings, costumes, props
