September 20, 2010 Culture and Self: Self Presentation From last time We search for consistent selves in interests, friends, displays of self Discrepancies between actual/ought and actual/ideal cause distress Culture affects self construal Independent vs. interdependent Independent Self Construal USA, Britain, Australia We have (mostly) stable traits Different situations may allow a person to express some traits, but generally identity does not depend upon a situation. Strive to be unique, not dependent on others, stand up for what we believe Communication is direct For the Interdependent Self Identity – who we are – depends upon context (whom we are with) We have a “family self”, a “work self” etc. Strive to be part of group, to fit in, and produce harmonious relationships Question: What are my obligations? What are others’ obligations to me?
