August 30, 2010 Research Methods From last time: Units of analysis vs. levels of analysis Focus of social psychology is individual and interpersonal relationships #1 Begin with Theory Organizes and explains phenomena Range varies Allows prediction: “if condition a holds, then x will occur” People learn behavior by watching the behavior of others. If people watch more violence, they will behave more violently. Theoretical perspectives Frames of reference and categories Not mutually exclusive (p.19) Factors Roles ( role theory ) – there are scripts for roles that we follow Rewards and punishment ( reinforcement theory , social learning) – Pavlov’s dogs, “If you do this (good or bad), you get this (good or bad)” Cognitive organization, processing, framing ( cognitive theory ) – our mind intervenes by reacting to stimuli before we act Symbolic communication ( symbolic interaction ) – figuring out our identity by interacting with our environment, many times
