Lecture Notes 4-28-09 Tokuguawa period - Creation of an economy and an impoverishment of people - The economic crisis resulting from basing the economy paying the samurai on rice; the falling price of rice because the quantity of rice put on the market increased. - Social order: Samurai, agricultural, artisans, merchants - Two ways to write in Japanese o Kanbun-written with all Chinese characters (kojiki was all written in kanbun) o Hiragana-cursive style; how tale of genji was written; basically a phonetic part of Japanese language Sorai - Noticed that something was wrong, studied the neo Confucian classics. - Believed that something in the cosmos telling what people to do was ridiculous - Believed that the original source of Confucian texts was better. - Advocated governance o Governance was nurtured to help and save the people. - Poetry is important to know what the culture was like back then, the customs, the language they were using helpful to learning about governance.
