Lecture Notes 5-19-09 1918: World War I ends 2. : Washington conference Gold standard/smooth convertible xchange - Cultural rule in Korea 1925 -Universal manhood suffrage 1928: - Chinese nationalist party established Nanking govt that is recognized by US Britain and Japan -Kuomintang is established 1929: -Great Depression 1930- -New Naval Treaty; increase ratio of aux ships to US - Assassination of PMJ Hamguchi 1 month after signing 1931: -Manchurian incident; bomb goes off in railroad coup attempt ; Officer’s plot and generals go along reluctantly; the cabinet and the PM are stampeded with threats that military would not protect them in event of a coup attempt. Other powers protest too late.; China complains to the League of Nations. War sells helps when the country is doing well. Media talks about how it is a response to “terror” excuse for attacking China. 1932: -March: Manchukuo and May 15: Kunkau is assassinated. (end of party rule) -April: CCP declares war on Japan and KMT sends troops to crush the CCP
