6.41 Homework - Fungi and People (10 points) We interact with fungi everyday. As decomposers, fungi can damage many different products including food, wood, cosmetics, paint, and even fuel. As parasites, fungi cause diseases of agricultural plants, of domestic animals, and of humans, in some cases. Humans utilize fungi in a positive manner. Most people are familiar with mushrooms- fungi that we consume directly. Mushrooms can be cultivated much like plants are cultivated for food. If we consider mushrooms as a vegetable, they are the fourth most valuable crop in the United States, They are less valuable than potatoes, tomatoes, and lettuce, but ahead of many crops such as onions, broccoli and carrots. Mushrooms are also picked in the wild as food. People have also learned to use fungi in an indirect manner to aid in the production of food products, pharmaceuticals, and industrial products. This varied use is the basis for the homework assignment. There are two questions.
