In this experiment the carbonated beverage was Sprite. According to Wikipedia titration is," Titration, also known astitrimetry,is a common laboratory method ofquantitativechemical analysisthat is used to determine the unknownconcentrationof an identifiedanalyte." The importance of performing this experiment is not only to teach us how to prepare and standardize stock solutions, but to alsoteach the process of titration and what it is. This can be applied to the medical field. The article Real Life Uses of Titration gives a few ways this can be used in the medical field for example it is used by pharmacists to compound different drugs together, doctors use this to get the correct proportion of medicines in an IV drip, or in patients to monitor the glucose levels in diabetic people, in blood work to see the concentration of different hormones in the blood, and even in urinalysis testing. Not just human doctors use it for these reasons but vets use it too. An exampleof vets using this is from the article "Dose titration and confirmation tests for determination of cesticidal efficacy of epsiprantel in dogs". In this article it tells how the dose of this medicine was calculated by using the process of titration. Objective:
Determine the concentration of a secondary standard solution by titrating with a primary standard. Titrate a sample of the Sprite with a standard solution to find the concentration of citric acid in the Sprite. Find the endpoint by adding an indicator to your sample.How are endpoint and equivalence point different?Materials:10ml graduated cylinder 3.2ml of the 1 bottle of ~2.5 M NaOH200ml volumetric flaskDI water 2-50ml flasks 1 bottle of KHP3-4 drops of PhenolphthaleinBurette 25-50ml graduated cylinder Pipettes20ml of Sprite pH paper 0.05g of citric acid weigh boats Procedure:
Part A of the experiment is to prepare the 0.040M NaOH. The first step is to take a 10mL graduated cylinder to measure out ~3.2mL of 2.5 M NaOH. Then add this to a 200mL volumetricflask. Once that has been done fill the 200mL volumetric flask to the line with deionized water. Once filled cork the 200mL volumetric flask and carefully invert it several times to insure the solution is homogenous. When finished move on to part B which is standardization of the 0.040 M NaOH solution just made in part A. The first step in part B is to calculate the exact concentration of NaOH by titrating with a primary standard. To start label two 50mL flasks for trial 1 and 2 after that measure out between 0.1 and 0.13g of KHP. Once that has been measures out record the exact mass to the 0.001g in the data section. After recording the mass dissolve the KHP by adding ~15mL of water to the 50ml flasks. To completely dissolve completely the solution may need to be swirled for several minutes.
