Lac Operon PhET SimulationThe goal of this simulation is to help you understand how prokaryotes control gene expression. Specifically, thisactivity will simulate an inducible operon called thelac operonused to controlthe expression of genes thatcontrol lactose levels in bacteria.Part 1 - Simulating how Gene Expression works1.Open the flash program.Click on the “Lactose Transport” tab on the top of the simulation (where thered arrow is pointing).2.On the screen you should seetwo floating blue molecules, these are RNA polymerase. There is also anincomplete DNA gene beneath them. You can turn on the legend in the lower right and that will help youidentify the molecules.Click the “show legend” box in the lower right.3.Drag the lac promoter into place on the stretch of DNA.DoNOTdrag the lacZ gene to the DNA. Thenwait about 30 seconds. What happens to the RNA polymerase? Are any new molecules created?
