The ability to critically examine the way things are in society and connect private experiences to larger social trends Social location We each have a particular space in society based on our race, gender, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, physical/mental abilities, family structure, as well as other factors. It is shaped by our experiences. The social construction of reality Our experiences of the world effect our definition of reality. Reality is defined through social interaction. Meaning derives from one’s social location. Society is made up of social institutions. We derive our social identities from the social groups and social institutions we belong to.
