Orgs 4 Notes: Mission and Structure: -the biggest national organization: the UN -they are nicknamed the smirffs -the US doesn’t really like them -created in 1945 -Purpose is to resolve international disputes before they become conflicts -192 members -Vatican City opted not to join (the 193 state) -the creation was also based on the pursuit of human rights because of the genocide of WWII -All the countries in the world agreed that human rights needed to be protected -In 1948 the Universal declaration of Human Rights was passed -UN goals: facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights The UN can be summed into 3 categories: 1. Peace keeping and security 2. Human rights and humanitarian assistance 3. Social and economic development Committees and sub committees of the UN: 1. The world bank 2. International monetary fund (IMF) 3. UNICEF 4. World health organization (WHO) 5. UNESCO Major divisions of the UN: 1. General assembly, they pass the laws and resolutions 2. Secretariat, overseer of the general assembly etc.
