Brian Sek April 9, 2009 Physics 4BL, Lab 7 Lab Partner: Chris Tonthat Uncertainty and Statistics Introduction There are a number of causes that can offset data from the desired values, when taking measurements. The purpose of this lab is to observe the random error that occurs in the base measurement as well as the standard deviation. Another aim of the lab is to determine error propagation that results from addition and division of measured quantities, by providing two sources, and varying the resistance. Experimental Results Part 1: In the first part of the experiment, voltage was measured by the Labview program on the computer. To generate the voltage a circuit board, power supply, battery, and Zener diode were used. After attaching the wires to the appropriate places, and the signal to the channel, measurements could be taken. Labview was used to collect six different data sets of sample sizes N= 10, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, and 10000 with ten ensembles of data for each sample size. Figure 1:
