Diana Wu 803576180 18 November 2008 Physics 4BL Sec 5 Speed of Sound and Light II. Introduction The purpose of this lab is to measure the speed of sound and the speed of electromagnetic waves. For the former, I will measure the period and corresponding wavelength of the wave propagation from a loudspeaker at different frequencies as well as measuring the root mean square of the pressure produced by standing waves. For the latter, I will use a directional dipole antenna to receive the electromagnetic waves emitted by a cordless telephone both as I rotate the antenna and as I vary the distance between a moveable reflector plate and the phone. III. Experimental Results Part A1 For this section, I measured the period of sound waves produced by a planar bi- directional loudspeaker via the piezoelectric effect using a microphone that produces an electrical signal proportional to the sound wave. Comparing this signal to that produced by the function generator, I moved the microphone at a distance equivalent to one and two periods on the function generator, thus obtaining a value for wavelength.
