Andrew Platt Memo on Islam 1. What are the Five Pillars of Islam? Explain what each means. Five Pillars of Islam 1 Confession of faith: “ There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his Messenger” 2 Recitation of prayers five times a day, facing Mecca 3 Almsgiving the practice of making charitable contributions to the Islamic community 4 Fasting from dawn to sunset during the sacred month of Ramadan (during which Muhammad received his calling) 5 Pilgrimage (hajj) to the holy city of Mecca at least once in a Muslim’s lifetime. 2. What does the phrase “people of the Book” mean? I believe that this refers to people who follow Islam, which means they follow the Qur’an (Muslims). 3. List four similarities one sees between Islam, Christianity and Judaism. List five differences. Similarities: Differences: All have a religious text: Christianity-The Bible, Islam-Qur’an, Judaism-The Torah. The death of Jesus in Christianity, Islam and Judaism: In Christianity and Judaism Jesus died by crucifixion, however, in Islam, Jesus did not die, but ascended into heaven during crucifixion. Christianity, Islam and Judaism worship the same God-Christianity- Yahweh, Islam- Allah (Arabic for God), Judaism-Yahweh. Christianity and Islam’s afterlife’s were different: Christianity-vague, Islam-very descriptive. Both Christianity and Islam’s afterlife
