General Biology I Study Objective Questions # 12 DNA Structure Reading: Raven et.al., Chapter 14 1. The genetic material is stored in which cell organelle? What experimental evidence supports your assertion? The genetic material is stored in the nucleus. Hammerling Experiment - grafted stalks of different species of Acetabularia (algae) onto the foot of another species (containing nucleus). The cap that developed was dictated by the nucleus-containing foot rather than by the stalk 2. What is transformation? Which experiment proved this process? Transformation is the uptake of DNA directly from the environment; a natural process in some bacterial species. Griffith’s experiment proved this process. A mixture of heat-killed virulent and live nonvirulent bacteria produced pneumonia in the mice- indicating the genetic information for virulence was transferred from dead, virulent cells to live, nonvirulent cells, transforming them from non-virulent to virulent. 3. Is the hereditary material protein or nucleic acid? What experimental evidence supports this view? The hereditary material is NOT protein, but nucleic acid.
