General Biology I Study Objective Questions # 11 Chromosomes, Mapping and the Meiosis-Inheritance Connection Reading: Raven et. al., Chapter 13 1. Describe the chromosomal theory of inheritance . What evidence is there supporting this theory? The Chromosomal theory of Inheritance states that hereditary traits, genes are carried on chromosomes. Observations that similar chromosomes paired with one another during meiosis supported this theory. Example: Inheritance of the sex chromosomes correlates with eye color, showing the white gene is in the X chromosome- SEX LINKAGE 2. How is sex genetically determined in humans? Is this the same for all species? Y chromosome determines maleness in humans. This is not he same for all species. ..in birds, the male has two Z chromosomes, females have ZW. Insect females have XX, and males have XO (O indicates absence of a chromosome).

Sex-linked genes: A trait determined by a gene on the sex chromosome (X or Y) Example: Hemophilia-bleeding Disorder- Sex linked recessive Autosomal genes: A trait determined by a eukaryotic gene that is not a sex chromosome.
