Me, Myself & “I”: The Selfish Generosity of Writing & LiteracyAs a student, writing is something I engage in very regularly. For the different types of essaysand reports I have written in my academic tenure till date, I have to use my critical thinkingability and interdisciplinary approach to be able to evaluate different topics of discussion usingvaried perspectives and subjects. For example, studying the topic of student debt through thelens of anthropology, economics and political studies while also keeping in mind the differentcases and implications of different types: socioeconomic, racial and cultural aspects. Thesecauses and implications can allow me to strengthen my opinions on similar subjects or allow meto evaluate it in a neutral manner. Similarly, throughout this semester we have studied differentforms of literacy activism. Therefore, the way I analyze similar concepts has in some waychanged.The transformation has not been significant but has consolidated the way I analyze debatableand controversial topics. This consolidation has come through practicing my critical thinkingability, which has been put to use often via this course. Understanding the different literacyinitiatives and the promotion of literacy in different sectors, such as my own literacy history andnon-profits who try to bring literacy to marginalized groups. Firstly, in the case of our firstproject, I was able to bring an analytical lens to a personal topic. Examining my literacy historywas a very fulfilling activity since I was able to identify both the pros and cons of the over-competitiveness of and in my high school.
