Trevor Nestor Period 1 “Love Canal” Video Write-Up Today, an empty lifeless field in New York covers a once active playground full of kids at a public school. Little did residents know that their children were playing on top of a toxic landfill. Before long, residents contracted diseases and toxic leachate ooze lifted from blacktop and was found in basements. Many residents complained of choking smells, waste barrels, irritation, burns, and even the death of loved ones. Problems were heightened after a series of heavy rains and snowfalls. Later, hundreds of toxic chemicals were identified to have been at dangerously high levels in the area. Until about 1953, the Hooker Chemical Company used a small ditch known as “Love Canal” to dump about 20,000 tons of toxic industrial waste. With little top no regulations at the time, the canal was simply covered in a small layer of dirt and clay. Soon, the area of land was bought and a school was built on top of it; 99 th Street School.
