Andrew Crowley Catholicism and the Modern World Higher Criticism- This was a school of ideas in the beginning of the 20 th Century, where people tried to prove all the miracles of Christ’s using the scientific method. Obviously from the stances of Vatican I these modernist ideas were considered a “threat” to the Church. This forced everyone involved to practice in secret until Vatican II where the church opened up to the world, modernist ideas are generally more accepted through the church after this council. Vatican I- This was the Council before Vatican II called by Pope Pius IX. It started in 1869 and lasted through 1870. The Council accomplished two main points. The first was to define papal infallibility, which says that the pope continually speaks the word of God continually through the holy spirit, and because of that the pope cannot be wrong. The second point was the drafting of Pascendi, which was a document closing off the church from the modern world and going straight back to the basics of Catholicism at its start after Jesus rose to Heaven.
