Your Instructor My name is Ed Weems. I am a Permanent Lecturer in the College of Management and have been a member of the faculty since 1997. I have over 30 years experience building companies and am a Director of Venture Management Inc. which assists companies in business planning and strategy, marketing and sales planning. I have a BA from the University of Richmond, an MBA from George Washington University and completed additional postgraduate studies at the University of Virginia. My office is room 2341, second floor of Nelson Hall in the Business Management Department. When I Can Meet With You My normal office hours, for the Fall 2010 semester, are 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM Monday and Wednesday except during University holidays. I will work with you to ensure you get the time you need with me. Simply see me before or after class, leave me a message on my voice mail, send me an e-mail, or call me. My Goal for the Course Simply stated my goal is for you to, at the end of the course, have a thorough understanding of: Why marketing is important What marketing involves How to develop a marketing program THE COURSE What the Course is About This is a basic course in marketing with a focus on what marketing encompasses and the methods employed to develop and carry out marketing programs. In this course we will cover the entire marketing process. You will learn how to assess the marketplace, understand the market place and target the market place. You will also learn about marketing ethics, entrepreneurship and global marketing. You will explore the marketing process in large corporations and medium sized companies as well as small businesses including startups. Why the Course is Important Regardless of what position you occupy in a business or what size business you are associated with you play a role in marketing and promoting the business. It is important, therefore, that you fully understand the marketing process as an integral part of the overall pursuit of success by the business.
