Unformatted text preview: History 7A, American History from European Colonization to Civil War Professor Mark Peterson Fall 2010 Paper Assignment #2 November 2, 2010 The assignment for this second paper in History 7A offers you a greater variety of choices and options than in assignment #1, in part because you have a wider range of evidence, from both primary and secondary sources, to draw on. Before you begin to write, give careful thought to the various sources and how best to use them in constructing your essay. TOPIC : Much of the assigned reading in this course has focused on the making of new forms of society and culture in various parts of North America, and how these have changed over time. Your task is to choose one aspect of American society or culture in the half century after the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1788 and write an essay about it. When historians write about the past, they have to figure out for themselves what the important questions are, and then how to answer them with the evidence at their disposal.
