Students will perform several subjective nutritional assessments and compare and contrast their results to those obtained from more controlled analytical methods performed in the laboratory. A second objective of the course is to provide students with experience in composing and interpreting scientific literature, which is accomplished through the composition of weekly lab reports (in formal scientific format) and presentations of current scientific articles. Class meeting times: Lectures: MWF 11-11:50AM Lab: Tuesdays 12-6PM Prerequisites: Students enrolled in NUT117 need to have received a “C” or better in the following courses: ABI 102, ABI 103, NUT 111AV, NUT 111B, and either NUT 112 or MCB 120L (or another upper division laboratory course in biochemistry). Required Materials: Laboratory coat. Readings: Scientific articles related to topics discussed in class will be posted weekly on SMARTSITE. Each Friday two students will give a presentation of an article from those posted. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO READ THE ARTICLES THAT WILL BE PRESENTED IN ADVANCE. There is no text for the course.
