Chem. 207 -- Experiment No. 3 Gravimetric Analysis of a Nickel Ore Sample Fall 2010 Introduction In this experiment a nickel ore sample will be analyzed by gravimetry. From this analysis, the percent nickel can be determined. Background In this experiment an ore of nickel will be analyzed by gravimetric analysis. In the case of nickel the precipitating reagent is dimethylglyoxime, which is virtually specific for nickel. HO OH N N CH 3 C C H 3 C Dimethylglyoxime The reaction of dimethylglyoxime (DMG, C 4 H 8 O 2 N 2 ) proceeds as follows: Ni 2+ ( aq ) + 2 C 4 H 8 O 2 N 2 → Ni(C 4 H 7 O 2 N 2 ) 2 ( s ) + 2H + ( aq ) Eq. 1 N N C C CH 3 CH 3 O O Ni O O H 3 C H 3 C C C N N H H From the above, it can be seen that the resulting complex is not charged and thus is not soluble in water. In addition to this, the complex tends to form a crystalline precipitate, which has advantages over colloidal systems. Objectives
