Kelley Krueger GLST 200/10 am/ Schur “Revised 30 September 2010” “Write” on pg 249 Photography is an extremely powerful medium. This power means that the use of gruesome images in the news media has to be seriously considered. Before publishing an image of a dead person, one must ask themselves two questions “Do people really NEED to see this?” and “What if this was me or my family?” Journalists must remember that as they seek the news, they must weigh the cost of their reporting on private individuals. Photographs of dead people do not really increase the way in which the audience understand the facts of the event, they only serve to satiate morbid curiosity. While I’m torn on my view of whether or not these pictures serve as a cultural taboo, I believe it is only taboo (for the most part) in more western societies (i.e. America and Canada). Countries all over the world are not ashamed to flash many gruesome pictures in the media; quite the contrary actually, they are almost reverent in showing
